Very angry with Ubuntu Natty |
Cannot believe it.
One day an idiot wakes up and decides to spoil the way system-tray works since Age of Stone. Result? Well, you won't find your app anymore there. In this case, the idiot I'm talking about is the creator of Unity Ubuntu GUI. If you Google around for a while, you'll find a lot of disappointed people not finding anymore their favorite apps in system tray.
Luckily, crazyness hasn't got over GUI creators, and you can add your app to systray-whitelist using the following method.
First, get your current settings for systray-whitelist: gsettings get com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist
Then, add your app to the above list with this command: gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "[ your_previous_list_here, 'wally']"
Since now I'm reconsidering my Ubuntu support. If I have to run after its creators' moodiness, better stay away and dedicate my time to coding new features.
Thank God, I use Slackware. |

If you're upgrading to 10.04 Lucid, KDE4 will crash at boot. To recover your system, just do the following steps:
- Press Alt-F2, type "konsole" - At prompt, type "sudo rm /usr/lib/kde4/plasma_wallpaper_wallyplugin.so" - Restart your system. - KDE4 should start normally. Please remove Wally.
I'm preparing Wally packages for Lucid, they should be available ASAP. |

0.3.3 released |
Hi guys!
A new version of ClamCour is available. Main feature is the removal of mutexes for threads synchronization, they're a bit hard to control with socket files. I gave a pre-release version to Francisco a month ago, and there weren't problems until now (as far as I know). So I've released it now, and I'm looking forward to your feedbacks ( I hope positive :) )
Two words about some points that have puzzled me for some time, suggested by Federico and Francisco:
Courier doesn't let me know if a message is incoming or outgoing, and trying to discover it isn't a simple task, cause your server configuration can have infinite possibilities. So custom message will be delivered in any case, even when you don't need it. You choose.
Sometimes "sender" field in custom message can be apparently wrong. I've done a lot of tests with Federico, but data reported in Courier's control file matchs mine, so the problem is elsewhere, as far as I was able to discover.
In any case, if you have more infos about that, I'll be glad to know them :)
Thank you guys, as always.
Regards, Tony. |

Hi everyone! :-)
Glad to meet you again! I'm sorry for my absence in last months, but I was very busy with my job (I work in Siemens at the moment). At least I've found some time to dedicate to ClamCour. And here's the brand new version, 0.3. I hope that more logging will help me solve some issues on 64-bit platforms. New features are quarantine support and customizable message to destination recipients. Next feature will be spam module (I hope, and only when this version will be declared "stable").
LET ME ADVISE YOU THAT THIS IS A DEVELOPMENT VERSION! So please don't run it (or do it at your risk) on production servers. |

Software *stnetaP* (revert it, cause Google is fool) |
European Council Presidency adopts Software *stnetaP* Agreement against Council's Rules.
Many software developers have published their rage against this agreement, and they have all my support. We've just made our first step to intellectual regression and software development's stop.
Here I report an abstract from Namesys website, ReiserFS's developer, where they publish their point of view about this matter, which I totally agree.
Equal Source Code Access Is A Civil Right Copyright and *tnetap* laws were invented to give you an incentive to share your knowledge with the rest of the world in return for a limited time monopoly on what you shared. That is not the way it works with software though, because software companies are allowed to keep their source code secret, but are still given monopoly rights over their software. There is little meaningful sharing of knowledge when binaries only are shared with the world, and all the rest is kept as a secret. The reasons for the existence of copyright and *tnetap* laws have been forgotten, their workings have been twisted, and greed and turf defense are what remain of them. Monopoly interests have taken laws intended to promote progress in the arts and sciences, and now use them to to further their own control over us by ensuring that innovations not theirs cannot enter the market for improvements to software.
Think of software objects as forming a society, not yet at the level of an AI society, but still a group of programs interacting, and choosing whether to interact, with each other. Think of social lockout, whether it be in the form of racial discrimination as in the civil rights movement, Mercantilism as happened a few centuries ago, or the endless other forms of division in human society. Is it so surprising that this evil casts its shadow on cyberspace? Is it so surprising that our cybershadows also find ways to engage in social lockout of others? Most of the cyber-world of software lives under tyranny today.
We are part of a movement to create a free cyber-world we can all participate equally in. Namesys does not oppose copyright laws as they were invented (14 year monopolies which disclosed everything that was temporarily monopolized), it opposes copyright laws as they have been twisted. Namesys opposes unlimited time monopolies which disclose nothing, and lockout all other inventors.
Many others in this movement are opposed to copyright law, even the version of it in which it was first created. We feel they are not acknowledging that a trade-off is being made, and that this trade-off has value.
Yet still we choose to give our software away for free for use with software that is given away for free (e.g. Gnu/Linux). Since we don't have a lot of illusions about our ability to entirely change the world, and it is amusing to sell free software, for those who do not want to disclose their software and do not want to give it away for free, we charge a license fee and let them keep their improvements to our software without sharing them. These fees help substantially in allowing us to survive as an organization.
We don't make nearly as much money as we would from charging everyone for usage rights, but we do make just enough to get by, and that is important.;-) We don't really feel that everyone should follow our example and make their software no charge for most users (it is too hard to survive fiscally doing this), but we do think that everyone should disclose their source code, and no one should design their software to exclude working with other software (e.g. Microsoft's Palladium which makes such a mockery of Athena). |

I have just spent my time for a long, long holiday :-) ... however, good news are coming ... one more gallery in these days (Capri) ... and, most important, IceGenerator 0.5.5 is in final testing. Major changes are ID3 support, ICEMETAL script language (useful to generate dynamic META messages during stream), and many bugfixes.
You have also noticed many changes in my site. Tortuga Cam Live is suspended, cause PC-CAM 300 Linux drivers are very unstable. But I think that random pictures from my galleries will replace that lost. Another big change is portal data from satellite. METEOSAT and NOAA are now joined in one box with PREDICT, a software that tracks satellites orbits. I'm trying to add a planetary with Stellarium software. Cross your fingers ... |

SCO, when thieves want to make difference. |
There's nothing better than a good newspaper reading. According to that, I suggest SCO company to shut up their managers and spend their time trying to produce good software. For anyone that is asking now what is "SCO", it's an Utah's company that sells software applications (??) for "small-to-medium sized business", that records about 80 million dollars in a year of hard work (??).
This is a summary of SCO country manager's interview. He is Orlando Zanni (a perfect idiot, IMHO). This article was printed on "Repubblica" 2004, July 5th, page 21.
OZ: They compare us with who wants opensource death, or, even worse, who wants to make money by legal procedures. I want to confirm that they doesn't bring us a penny until now, they were very expensive. Our profits come from services and product sale.
Rep: What's wrong, then?
OZ: For us, Unix copyright is one of the most powerful assets. Our core business is Unix direct server installations, or with collaboration of IBM, Hp, or others, that install Unix on their servers, or directly to big customers as SCO/Unix systems. Well, main Unix's competitor is Linux. So we were forced to denounce IBM 'cause it began to use Linux, and to copy part of Unix and paste it into Linux, without respecting contractual rules that bind IBM to SCO.
Rep: So they have damaged you creating a clone-product, isn't it?
OZ: We thinks that this situation has contributed to Linux's growth in a little period of time, so it's a natural competitor for SCO/Unix now, cause it is very affidable. We had to undertake legal procedures, most controversial cause they were against final users. One against DaimlerChrysler for contract violation, another one against Autozone for copyright violation using Linux.
Rep: You deserve a "reputation of being quarrelsome", I suppose...
OZ: I don't know if we deserve it, but certainly we have it. SCO only wants to defend rights on its business' core. There's a main misunderstanding: that Linux distributions are free. How can we sustain this competition against a free product, and in the meantime try to conduct a company and pay our employees?
The rest of interview is ugly publicity. |

Tortuga Labs. Inc. COMPROMISED! |
Let me congratulate with x0n3-h4ck Team for a successful hacking against this web site happened on last Wednesday night. Obviously they've used all known (and unknown) techniques and tecnologies to do that, the way they used to enter administrator's page revealed their powerful knowledge of a secure content management system like PHP-Nuke. I've to admit that risk was very high, 'cause I use PHP-Nuke to store vital data for my systems and users. If someone steals a little amount of this data, he'll track down TLI in an extremely dangerous situation, Anyway, I'm a very lucky man, x0n3-h4ck Team didn't steal anything and didn't alter TLI stability (as far as I know), their respect is praiseworthy.
Ok, ok, I know what you're thinking ... "C'mon, Tony, don't tell us that you've posted this bullshit to let us know that x0n3-h4ck Team is a group of hackers that has the unique purpose of saving Internet from network anarchy ... tell us the truth, real truth!" ... mmhhh ... to be honest, I've a doubt about all that ... not a real doubt ... something strange that I wasn't able to understand.
Let me explain it. The way they used to let me know their successful hacking was a message upon "Tortuga World News" block. Actually I don't remember the exact content of that message, but the meaning of it was that they did it for my care, they wanted to show me in a clearly
way that PHP-Nuke has a security bug. Well, it sounded like an your friend fucks your wife and, after few days, he meets you and says: "Forgive me, but ... you know ... I'm your best friend ... i've to tell you that ... your wife is a bitch. I did it for you, for your protection ..." Even if someone can justify him using a rational point of view, no one can state that, after his speech, you can resist from destroying his testicles with a long series of kicks.
That's the way I felt ... Anyway, let me thank x0n3-h4ck Team again for their support, I really appreciate it. But, PLEASE, use my e-mail next time ...

I apologize for inconvenience |
Tortuga Labs. Inc. went offline at 4:00 AM on Sunday, 29 June, by a power failure. How was it possible? Easy to explain ... my fucking government doesn't handle power consumption correctly, so in this period electrical power needs grow and our centrals can't satisfy it. Moreover, as a consequence of stupidity of Italian people, the use of home cooling equipment had a rapid spread in early months, and many idiots leave their coolers working all day, so the entire electrical system crashes. I advertise that other power failures may happen in coming days, so don't blame about unreachability.
Bad news apart, I'm proud to host unzaund.tortugalabs.it. I think it will become one of the most breakthrough site of Tortuga Labs. Inc.
Good luck, Unzaund!!!! |

Here we are ... the domain is active, all (or almost all) is working (?)
I'm trying to finish "Stuff" zone. Shockwave Flash file format is a bit tricky, so it slows down my work.
It will be finished ASAP. |
